Pfizer speak for layoffs - "involuntary separation"

Poor Pfizer. The largest drugmaker in the world is cutting about 300 jobs, almost 40 percent of its 800-person Lincoln, Nebraska workforce, over the next few years, as part of its $4 billion worldwide restructuring.

Spokesman Rick Chambers said this week that the company has reduced the number of people working at the Lincoln plant by about 37 since the restructuring was announced. “This has been achieved entirely through attrition,” he said. “These are people who have left the Lincoln operation of their own accord for new jobs or other personal reasons, and we’ve not re-filled those positions. In fact, so far we have not involuntarily separated anyone.”

Insider is please to hear that Rick. It sounds painful!

Here's an example of the severance offered to Pfizer employees who will be losing their jobs, according to Rick.

An employee with one year of employment before separation would receive 60 days of pay during his or her “notice period,” the time between being told that the job is being eliminated and formally being let go.

In most cases, people are not asked to work during those 60 days. That employee would then get 16 weeks of pay (13 weeks of pay plus an additional three weeks of pay for one year of service) and 12 months of medical coverage.

I know that some who volunteer to leave are told they will be fired if they do not quit.

The people being told this are not "bad" employees.
