Spirited Sales Leaders - In defense of cheerleaders

With pom-poms and perma-smiles, the quintessentially American cheerleader is crucial to the morale of high school sports teams. But the flips, kicks and cheers are not only useful in teenage years: pharmaceuticals companies are employing cheerleaders as sales representatives.

Demand has become so great, a recruitment database has been set up by a former cheerleader. Spirited Sales Leaders says cheerleaders "possess all the qualities you need to transform your staff into a successful sales team".

So, they transform staff! Wow.....that is leadership!

Lamberto Andreotti, president of worldwide pharmaceuticals for Bristol-Myers Squibb, told The New York Times: "It has nothing to do with looks, it's the personality."

Thanks Lamberto.

LOL! Insider is waiting to hear from all those "non-cheerleader reps" who might have a view on this!! BMS reps especially.

What a crock. They are hard nosed bitches who are often on the lookout for an MD husband!

That will be the next NYT story!

Speaking of BMS Mr. Andriotti is correct....except for the personality part!

Speaking of BMS. LOL!
Whats up? CafePharma is smokin' tonite. Are there layoffs coming?

Will the choices be on looks, personality or sales?

Must be a trend - the "merketts" are being laid off too...all going the way of the "Baycol Babes". It becomes obvious to anyone sitting in a doctor's office that there are three types of reps. There are post cheerleaders, post sportsmen and there are those who were hired over 20 years ago when brains, personality and the ability to communicate were reasons to be hired.

Never forget, sales people also earn more than the scientist that develop the drugs. Substantially more.

The top five Pharma's spend nearly twice as much on marketing than development.

In other words, your best path to Pharma success, cheer leading and a degree in anything or not... Another fun fact, sale reps do not have to have college degrees.

This is so demeaning and ridiculous. Shame on you Insider for getting caught in this story that has no "facts" whatsoever in it. You have a lot of valuable information. Shouldn't you leave this for Cafe Pharma and the NYT?

An admonishment! How marvellous.

I'm afraid you have now seen Insiders' wicked side! He promises to come up with plenty of "facts" in the future. But he also promises to take the piss exactly as and when he feels like it!

By the way. Sex does indeed sell. The "Pfired cheerleaders" have had the most hits of any page on PharmaGossip!!

Now there's a fact for you.

If you're just looking for the number of hits, why don't you just show porn? Wicked or not, yes, sex sells BUT please give us hard data, not just fluff. There are some of us in this industry that come to your blog to get accuracy on the inside.

Again - Leave Cafepharma to the losers who don't care about the "industry" side of things.

Hmm. Crestor...but for full sex, maybe.
