Glaxo vs Sicko?

A little while ago PharmaGossip reported on the news that GSK US was planning to turn all of it's 8000 drug reps into PR spokespeople!

The UK Independent has an interesting piece which discusses both this move and the forthcoming Michael Moore movie about US healthcare "Sicko!", which is due out soon.

"Ken Johnson, senior vice-president of trade group Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, applauded GSK's initiative and said he expected others in the industry to follow suit."

"From our perspective, it's not enough for salespeople to be marketers of products. They need to be ambassadors of the industry as well," he said. "We have a great industry and shouldn't be ashamed of defending it."

Not unexpectedly, GSK deny any link between their PR idea and Sicko!

The joke is on Michael Moore. GSK has required reps to do at least one of these community presentations per year since 2002. Some savvy GSK PR man just got some great publicity for the program.
