Merck makes room at the top.

Merck has confirmed the departure of a second top executive in as many days.

Per Wold-Olsen, a 30-year Merck veteran who ran the pharmaceutical company's European drug operations, has informed the company of his decision to retire.

His departure comes one day after it was revealed that Bradley Sheares, a 20-year Merck man who ran Merck's U.S. pharmaceutical sales business, was leaving.

The shake-up in the executive suite of the Whitehouse Station, N.J., drug giant could signal that bigger changes are on the way.

The departures are also a sign of the increasing importance of Peter Loescher, the newly appointed second-in-command at Merck.
