Pfizer - Lyrica: Jocks say "nay, nay and thrice nay"!

Apologies for the headline, but Frankie Howard and the "Up Pompeii" series are being rerun on the BBC! LOL

The Scottish Medicines Consortium has rejected pregabalin (Lyrica) for use in peripheral neuropathic pain in adults on the NHS in Scotland.

This is the third time the SMC has reviewed pregabalin for nerve pain following a review in March 2005 and a re-submission in September 2005. The result of the re-submission was reported here.

Despite 18 months having passed since the first review the SMC still state that, “Comparative clinical and cost effectiveness have not been demonstrated”.

Hat tip: Precsribing advice for GPs

That's a shame. I know of a few people specifically who have benefited from Lyrica when nothing else has worked. :(

So it's found its niche - last resort!

Never a bad place to be ;). And it's actually more effective than things like Neurontin -- it's just that Neurontin tends to be less expensive, because it's available as a generic. ;)

I'll pass that little comment onto the Director of our local (public) hospital "Pain Unit"

No doubt like the best of (lack of) evidence he will ignore it.
