The Whistleblower: Confessions of a Healthcare Hitman by Dr Peter Rost - a review by PharmaGossip

Dr Rost has written his side of the fascinating story of his recent working life in a most readable fashion. It is a book that totally grabs your attention and holds it right through to the last page.

Insider could not put this book down until he had finished it.

The book charts Dr Rost's corporate life over the past few years. In particular it follows his transition from "company hitman" to "corporate outlaw" to becoming a "guerilla fighter" within Pfizer, the company that finally fired him.

The content is fascinating. Starting in 2003 when Pfizer takes over Pharmacia, where Dr. Rost worked.

Pfizer then "Pfired" more than 10,000 Pharmacia employees.

The book also reveals shoddy business practices at Pharmacia, which Rost brought to light during the Pfizer acquisition, resulting in the FBI, the FDA's Enforcement Division, the Justice Department, the New York State Attorney General, and the Securities and Exchange Commission all calling him in for questioning over the course of the following year.

His treatment within Pfizer, from then on, upto the point when they fired him, is both horrific and compelling at the same time. The writing style (with a dry humor) makes it possible to empathise with Dr Rost and his predicament.

Indeed, Insider has been through a similar situation, which might be why he felt shivers (past memories he has tried to forget)!

Rost makes the case and contends that the "American Dream" has been stolen by a new class of "Robber Barons" - the CEO's of our big corporations. Including, of course, Big Pharma.

"A political system dependent on charity from rich men in hand-tailored suits with $100 million retirement packages is no democracy. It is a kleptocracy. It is not what our founding fathers envisioned."

In this reviewer's opinion the case is well made.
