What a quote!

"The worst thing that happened to our industry was that we got pushed into one political camp,"

So says Billy Tauzin, former Republican congressman who is now president and CEO of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America.

Remind me again Billy....... who was doing the pushing?

The pharma industry's approach to politics over the last five years reminds me of Nicholas Cage in Leaving Las Vegas. Industry leaders seem fatalistic that they are going to get the shit whacked out of them by the U.S. government at some point (just like all the damn European countries have already done). So they're sucking at the Republican teat of pricing schemes, tax manipulation and suspect regulatory relationships as long as they can.

Some people might look at pharma's lobbying and governmental affairs efforts and think they at least got a few good years out of the deal. But the failure to build a long-term coalition (small business owners? patient advocacy groups?) to support medical innovation will hurt our industry for a long time to come.
