AstraZeneca's new CEO - worth every cent?

David Brennan, AstraZeneca's chief executive officer, received a total compensation package of almost $4.9 million last year, according to the company's 2006 annual report.

Brennan's pay package included $1.72 million in salary, and bonuses in cash and stock of more than $1.9 million.

Brennan, who became CEO of the London-based company on Jan. 1, 2006, also received an additional payment of more than $1.2 million for relocating with his family from the United States and the company's payment of associated taxes.

Mr.David Brennan, seems like a nice guy and considering his position and success of A/Z Co. one would agree he deserves it. However he is still a "light weight" compared to Dr. Daniel Vasella at 44 million SF or 36 million $US, just about 8 times David's take. How do they decide on the compensation at this level? Maybe it is the "celebrity effect" that makes the real difference. Doc Danny, as they call him has been some kind of celebrity for a while, regular at Davos the gathering of the World's cream of the cream and has been celebrated as top CEO in Europe for many times.
According to a recent post here, there are some serious doubts as to Novartis' success re share holders' value which has been lingering on the same level in the last 6 years.
Make a comment re this and vote if these two importan CEO's heading two equally major big pharma cos. should be paid more or less equally, either at David's level or at Danny's level. Lets see which D level is appropriate? Maybe neither?
