Is the NIH turning off the "consultancy tap"?

Back story here, and here

The NIH has announced that it would seek to ban its scientists from all outside paid consulting activities with drug and biotech companies for at least one year, while the agency reviews its procedures and develops more "effective oversight systems".

The proposed NIH ban will not go into effect until approved by Tommy G. Thompson, secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, and the Office of Government Ethics (OGE), a process that could take months.

In a July 2004 report the OGE recommended that NIH intramural scientists be prohibited from outside consulting.

Read all about it.
