AstraZeneca cuts 950 jobs in Germany

The German subsidiary of AstraZeneca said it plans on cutting some 900-950 jobs in Germany as part of its global restructuring plans.

The pharmaceuticals group plans to close its factory in Plankstadt near Heidelberg, which employs 400 staff, between now and the end of 2009 when it will either sold or closed, it said.

The move comes as part of a global restructuring programme announced in February, which will see the firm cutting around 3,000 jobs worldwide over three years.

AstraZeneca's other German plant, which employs around 180 staff, will not see any redundancies, but the group does expect to restructure its sales and marketing activities in Germany, which should lead to staff cuts of between 500 and 550 people.
