The Nigerian justice official who filed a $2 billion lawsuit against Pfizer and is now preparing to charge the drugmaker criminally said yesterday the company's conduct was something out of the movie "The Constant Gardener."
Pfizer dispatched doctors and medicine as part of an international humanitarian effort to halt a 1996 meningitis epidemic, but instead illegally conducted a drug experiment on 200 children and infants, said Aliyu Umar, prosecutor for the northern Nigerian state of Kano.
"People who come to help should bring genuine help," Umar said in a telephone interview.

"They should give medicine that is certified by their own government and international standards, and not come to experiment with people simply because they want help."
