Merck is to cut spending on its promotion and salesforce by 9% before the end of this year.
A source at Merck said the spending cuts would include job losses, although a final figure had not been agreed. A Merck spokeswoman declined to comment.
The company employs around 60,000 staff worldwide. Figures for its salesforce were unavailable from the company, although analysts believe they employ up to 10,000 representatives worldwide.
The news comes as a growing number of big pharmaceutical firms, including Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis and Wyeth, are slashing their sales staff.
