The former head of China's State Food and Drug Administration has been executed after being found guilty on corruption charges.
The official news agency Xinhua says the death sentence against 62-year-old Zheng Xiao was carried out after the failure of his appeal to the Supreme People's Court.
He was sentenced by a lower court in May after being convicted of taking bribes worth around $US850,000.He is the highest ranking official to be executed since 2000.
Zheng was accused of lowering standards in renewing drug production licences, leading to the manufacture of fake drugs in a system already plagued by corruption and regulatory loopholes.
