The European Union (EU) has raided the offices of GlaxoSmithKline and AstraZeneca as part of an investigation into whether pharmaceutical companies have abused patents to limit supplies of generic medicines, The Times has reported.
The commission said it has no direct evidence of any illegal activities. It is investigating the European offices of more than a half-dozen major pharmaceutical companies.
Among the companies included in the probe with ties to the Philadelphia region are GlaxoSmithKline, Merck and AstraZeneca.
The companies contacted by the commission said they are cooperating with the investigation.
The commission expects to release an interim report on its finding this fall, and a full report in spring 2009.
