Mawdsley Brooks buy Luto

Pharmaceutical logistics and support group Mawdsley Brooks has snapped up Leeds University spin-out Luto Research in a deal designed to expand its reach in consumer healthcare communications.

Mawdsley Brooks range of services include internal regulatory affairs advice and clinical trials support, while Luto Research (Leeds University Testing Organisation), which was founded in 2004, specialises in developing, enhancing and testing communications for patients and healthcare professionals, with the core aim of providing accessible written information to “maximise the benefits of medicines whilst minimising potential harm”.

Financial details of the deal have not been disclosed, but explaining the rationale behind the decision Ian Brownlee, chief executive of Mawdsleys, said the firm believes Luto’s “pioneering work” in clarifying patient information will have “immediate synergies” with other companies within the group, such as the clinical trials support organisation Wellspring.

Of particular interest, he adds, is the potential application of methodology generated by Luto’s research into Wellspring’s work related to clinical trials patient information and informed consent, which, he believes, “will bring real benefits to trial participants and clients”.
