Chancellor Alastair Darling said that projects that were "not essential" for the front-line could be postponed.
He made his announcement speaking to Andrew Marr on the BBC.
He said: "It is necessary for me, on Wednesday, to indicate areas where we are going to cut spending and where we are not going to spend as much as we were.
"For example, the NHS has quite an expensive IT system that, frankly, is not essential for the front line. That’s something we do not need to go ahead with just now."
Treasury sources later said that the whole programme was unlikely to be axed.
A spokesman said: "The Chancellor and the Secretary of State for Health have examined options for savings on the NHS IT system and more details will be set out in due course."
