Los Angeles, CA (May 3, 2010) - Canon Communications LLC, today announced that it has acquired Pharmalot, an influential blog focused on news and information in the pharmaceutical industry. As part of the acquisition, Pharmalot’s founder, Ed Silverman, will join Canon as an Editor at Large in the Pharmaceutical Media Group and will continue as Pharmalot’s Editor. In addition to helping spearhead further development of Canon’s digital assets, including webcasts and podcasts, Silverman will also contribute to all of Canon’s pharma properties, including MedAd News and R&D Directions.
Pharmalot has been named one of The Times of London’s 50 Best Business Blogs and was a finalist in the 2010 Dose of Digital “Dosie” Awards in the Best Industry Observer Blog category. This acquisition reinforces Canon’s leadership position in the pharmaceutical marketing space and enhances Canon’s existing pharmaceutical assets, including news and opinion blogs Pharmalive.com, PharmaBlog Review, Med Ad News Insider and R&D Directions Insider, and print publications MedAd News and R&D Directions.
“Ed is an original voice within the pharmaceutical industry with an outstanding career as a journalist covering the major issues affecting the industry’s growth,” said Patricia Spinner, Canon’s Sr. Group Publisher, Pharmaceutical Media Group. “He is also a great addition to our digital media team, and we look forward to working with Ed as we continue to expand our digital offerings across all of the industries we serve.”
Silverman is a prize-winning journalist who has covered the pharmaceutical industry for nearly 15 years. Most recently, he has been a bureau chief for The Pink Sheet, the venerable industry newsletter, and a contributor to its sister publication, In Vivo magazine. Before that, Silverman worked as a business writer for The Star-Ledger of New Jersey, one of the nation’s largest daily newspapers, where he conceived and launched Pharmalot as a vehicle to follow a variety of topics of concern to those who work for, and with, drug makers - drug development, mergers and acquisitions, regulatory oversight, safety and pricing controversies, and marketing issues. Prior to joining The Star-Ledger, Silverman spent six years at New York Newsday and previously worked at Investor’s Business Daily, among other newspapers. He has a master’s degree in journalism from New York University and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Binghamton University.
