Managing Editor – BMJ Open
£competitive + benefits
Central London
Permanent
BMJ Open will launch later this year and we have a vacancy for a Managing Editor to prepare for launch and to lead the editorial processes.
The role of this journal will be to attract and provide rapid open access publication of methodologically sound and transparent research regardless of its appeal to a particular audience. This will include work that appeals only to small communities of clinicians/researchers. One of the unique aspects of the journal is its linking to the core data of the research.
BMJ Open is a pure Open Access journal – which will publish a high volume of medical research articles which might be rejected from the BMJ or BMJJs or which might be otherwise submitted to a journal outside the BMJ Group. There is no medical equivalent of this type of “mid-tier” publication which therefore fills a gap in the market. All authors will be asked to pay a publication fee, or article processing charge (similar to our existing ‘Unlocked’ model) and the content will be made open access immediately. There will be no subscription model for this journal.
Reporting to a Publisher, the Managing Editor will be responsible for overseeing all editorial aspects of BMJ Open. The managing editor will ensure that the processes for submission, peer-review and acceptance of content are effective and efficient and are in accordance with business expectations and the allocated budget. The managing editor has responsibility for ensuring the integrity and quality control of the scientific content published by the BMJ Open and for ensuring the implementation of and adherence to BMJ editorial policies.
