FT.com / Companies / Personal Goods - Report into J&J product recalls looms

FT.com / Companies / Personal Goods - Report into J&J product recalls looms: "An internal report into the manufacturing problems over the past year that tarnished some of Johnson & Johnson’s best-known products should be completed later this month, Bill Weldon, chief executive, said.

Mr Weldon told the Financial Times that the study, which includes scrutiny by executives and external experts, would help prevent repetition of the wide-ranging withdrawals of 40 household brands made by its McNeil Consumer Healthcare division, such as the cough medicine Tylenol.

When it comes to recalls J and J is certainly the poster child company in over the counter, drugs and devices and we all know this is going to grow with the additional information we have today.

I started a little campaign and a poll over at the Quack about using 2D bar coding for recalls and this would fit for a notification solution for all of the above as well as helping the FDA with compliance.

I sent this off to the FDA and DEA too as well as J and J and a few other companies with major recalls lurking out there. One technology can create solutions in many areas. Technology like this can help what Shire ran into with sending stolen expired drugs back for refunds too.

One company, is already advising and collaborating with the FDA for nutrition information on products so why not get the whole banana here? I had a Mom comment on Twitter that she could have used the cell phone scanner to read up on 7 products she had to check relative to her children.

I probably have over 30 posts now on this topic but we have been waiting since 2004 for the FDA to start some type of recall program and I think we have the available technology now too.

There's even a working model to authenticate MDs with prescribing controlled substances, using the same technology through an encrypted gateway.

Anyway, I just thought I would add these few comments here as it would really empower consumers and if J and J were to run a pilot program to show they are working to ensure safety (kind of like the BP issue that lacked a response initiative) they could stand to be the real come back "kid" here:)

I am thinking of the lives that could be saved here too as people get implanted with devices too that are missed from being pulled from the shelves too, just someone missing it, but then the device malfunctions and the patient dies. We have technology that can prevent that so why not get on the ball and this could be world wide too.
