Pharma Marketer Rich Meyer writes

The drug industry has to create an atmosphere that encourages people to speak out and their voices to be heard when they believe decisions are being made in favor of profits over patients health.  I asked some colleagues at various pharma companies if they would feel comfortable talking up when they observed something wrong but most said that when you go against the consensus you are usually rewarded either with a dead end job or being moved to the top of the list for layoff’s. Earlier this month Ed Siverman of Pharmalot wrote a piece about a sales person who was fired because she informed her company that her manager had asked to do something outside of their guidelines.  The fact that her review was by this same manager and that he fired her speaks to the fact that a lot of pharma companies don’t want people “who rock the boat”.
The drug industry talks about how they value patients and are putting them first in new drug development but that also needs to be extended to employees who know that we have a responsibility to ensure that patients understand all the risks of taking prescription medications and that data cannot and should not be manipulated to protect sales.
