PHARMACEUTICAL giant AstraZeneca is in talks with “a couple of potential occupiers” for the 69-acre research and development site.
Over the last few months, AstraZeneca, which will leave its Loughborough base by the end of the year, has been in talks with a number of interested parties.
Simon Moore, head of corporate communications, told the Echo that plans for the site had moved on from “marketing and identifying” potential buyers to being “in discussions” with them.
He said: “AstraZeneca has been proactively engaged in discussions with potential occupiers over the last few months, including businesses in the healthcare and medical sectors, research bodies, universities and property management companies. We have also worked closely with UK Trade and Investment in identifying possible opportunities internationally.
“Due to the confidential nature of these discussions we are unable to discuss any specifics regarding individual businesses or opportunities.
“During the first quarter of 2011, recommendations will be made to the AstraZeneca senior leadership.”
He would not confirm whether the potential buyers were interested in part or all of the site, which employs a 1,300-strong workforce.
It is expected that around 250 to 300 roles will transfer to Cheshire or other sites.
Looking beyond the spin of Big Pharma PR. But encouraging gossip. Come in and confide, you know you want to! “I’ll publish right or wrong. Fools are my theme, let satire be my song.” Email: jackfriday2011(at)hotmail.co.uk
