WASHINGTON -- Nearly 10% of all Medicare payments are fraudulent, causing the federal government to lose $48 billion on phony claims and other improper payments in 2010, a new government report found.
The massive size of Medicare -- which pays 4.4 million claims every day to 1.5 million providers -- combined with the program's complexity make it highly susceptible to improper payments, according to the report from the Government Accountability Office (GAO).
