Row over when Pfizer decided to axe Sandwich plant

Confusion over when Pfizer chiefs knew they intended to close the Sandwich plant has erupted after bosses where grilled for two hours by a select committee in Westminster yesterday.

Senior management admitted they put a freeze on recruiting senior positions in November when it became apparent the site was being discussed for closure.

The government says it only discovered the drug giant’s plans a week before the official announcement in February.

But it is also understood Pfizer chiefs met with Prime Minister David Cameron in November.

Thanet South MP Laura Sandys insists the government did not find out until January.
