Four pharmaceutical execs await fate in Pa. courtroom

PHILADELPHIA — Four pharmaceutical executives are facing up to a year in prison for unapproved medical testing that left three spine patients dead in the operating room.

The former Synthes Inc. officials have pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor involving the off-label use of a bone-cement product.

They could become the first executives sent to prison after pleading guilty as "responsible corporate officers."

Lawyers will make their arguments Tuesday in U.S. court in Philadelphia.

The government accused the former officials of human experimentation. The defendants deny any intent to violate U.S. Food and Drug Administration protocols.

The defendants are 53-year-old Michael Huggins of West Chester; 54-year-old Thomas Higgins of Berwyn; 57-year-old Richard Bohner of Malvern; and 48-year-old John Walsh of Coatesville.

Synthes had a U.S. headquarters in West Chester.
