Drugmaker AstraZeneca will layoff 1,150 employees in its U.S. sales force, including some in leadership roles, the company said today. Less than 10 of positions affected are in Delaware, a company spokesman said.
The announcement from comes just two months after the Fairfax-based company, under pressure from generic drugmakers, announced 400 layoffs in its U.S. business. Those layoffs are concentrated in Delaware and began to take effect this month.
“These changes are driven by the need to effectively compete in a challenging environment," said Tony Jewell, AstraZeneca spokesman. "We are building a leaner, more efficient U.S. organization that will enable us to continue delivering against our mission of patient health while remaining a strong, sustainable business in the future."
Layoff decisions will be finalized by February, Jewell said.
