Covidien to lay off 595, close South Carolina plant

Medical device maker Covidien Plc plans to close a South Carolina facility where it makes vascular products and lay off 595 full-time employees.

Dublin, Ireland-based Covidien, the parent company of Hazelwood-based Mallinckrodt, which is being spun off from Covidien, plans to move operations from Seneca, S.C., to its facility in Alajuela, Costa Rica, Reuters reports.

It will take about three years to complete the closure.
