Goldacre versus pharma debate: Video online

The PharmaTimes head-to-head debate between Dr Ben Goldacre and Stephen Whitehead is now available on our website at no cost to the viewer.

The video, shot during the debate at the Royal Institution last month, shows the author of Bad Science and Bad Pharma debate the notion ‘Pharma is not getting its act together’ with the chief executive of the ABPI.

Supporting Dr Goldacre on the panel was Dr Fiona Godlee, editor-in-chief of the British Medical Journal and Sir Iain Chalmers, co-founder of The Cochrane Collaboration.

On Whitehead’s table was Dr Beat Widler, CQA and Quality Risk Management expert and managing partner at Widler & Schiemann; and Dr Richard Tiner, formerly president of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine (2009-12) and ABPI medical director (1996-2009).

Dr Phil Hammond, GP and Private Eye and PharmaTimes Magazine regular, moderated the event.

The video and debate come at a timely juncture as the "juggernaut" of the AllTrials campaign continues with GlaxoSmithKline, NICE and the British Medical Association all signing up for greater clinical trial transparency.

The debate, which became heated at points, saw Whitehead describe AllTrials as nothing more than a “PR initiative”, something Goldacre has severely criticised.
