BMS/Sanofi Aventis - US generic Plavix in September?

This via the excellent Internet Drug News:

Shares of Sanofi-Aventis and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. slumped on speculation that a generic version of their top-selling Plavix blood thinner may become available within weeks.

David Snow, chief executive officer of U.S. drug distributor Medco Health Solutions Inc., said today that he expected a generic as soon as this month. Plavix was the world's second best-selling medicine last year, bringing in $6.3 billion for Paris-based Sanofi and New York-based Bristol-Myers.

Medco's prediction arose from "market chatter,'' Medco Chief Financial Officer Joann Reed said.

Apotex Inc., of Weston, Ontario, has U.S. approval to sell a copy, although Sanofi and Bristol-Myers agreed in March to pay Apotex at least $40 million to keep the generic off the market until 2011.

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is still reviewing the agreement, and state attorneys general have objected to it.
