Big Pharma's Big Problem - contd.

The Business have now picked up on Big Pharma's Big Problem.

They quote GSK's outgoing CEO JP Garnier's prediction that only "a handful" of the top 15 Big Pharmas will survive the next 5 to 10 years.

Big pharma is in a quandary. Discoveries are harder and more expensive to make than in the past; all the low hanging fruit has been picked. Talking to the British government about vague schemes, such as a countrywide vaccination against bird flu, won’t be enough to solve its problems.

Garnier is right: there is only one solution. Even more money must be spent on research to discover new drugs. It may be bad for immediate profits; but it is the only way big pharma can stay at the top.

Of course, regular PharmaGossip readers remain well ahead of the game!
