Waxman writes to Big Pharma - it's not a love letter!

Back story here.

Drugs and devices are coming under Senator Waxman's microscope.

Boston Scientific and Johnson & Johnson, makers of drug-coated coronary stents, said Congress asked for a broad range of information on how the companies spent funds for research, marketing and approval of their devices.

Three drugmakers received similar requests.

In letters today, Henry A. Waxman, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, asked whether marketing funds were spent for studies of the stents. Waxman asked for data on ``adverse events'' stemming from trials of the device and information on use of the stents for patients.

The requests suggest the oversight committee is concerned the companies may not have supplied all the data from the trials.

Similar letters were also sent to drugmakers Eli Lily & Co., Cephalon Inc. and AstraZeneca related to research and approvals of some of their medicines.

The California Democrat also asked whether the companies helped to write the research papers and to disclose researchers' compensation.
