The NHS risks losing millions of pounds after a European legal opinion that calls for a ban on the growing practice of paying doctors to persuade them to prescribe cheaper medicines.
The European Court of Justice is expected to rule next month on a recommendation by Niilo Jääskinen, the advocate general, in favour of British drug companies, which have criticised the “prescribing incentive schemes” increasingly operated across the NHS.
