Roche - big pimpin' from Avastin and Herceptin

Roche said today its first quarter revenue increased 22 percent to $7.7 billion, driven by its cancer medicines.

Cancer drug Avastin, which is approved as a treatment for colon cancer, recorded sales of $533 million, rendering it Roche's third-best selling product.

Worldwide sales of Herceptin have effectively doubled in the first quarter 2006 compared with the same period last year.

Big pimpin', guys!

Both Herceptin and Avastin have each added *years* to my sister's life. She's living with stage IV breast cancer and hops from one drug to the other, and back again. I have a feed set up for Avastin and it's always unsettling to see pharma or stock info come through my feed (though it happens quite often). Every now and then I feel compelled to comment on this stuff - just a simple reminder that we're talking about real people. I haven't read through your entire blog, but the word "pimpin" in relation to these drugs just sort of set me off, I guess. People are getting rich on stuff my sister wouldn't be alive without. Sometimes it just hits me how weird that is.

Real people indeed. My family too have been struck with cancer.

That said. Big Pharma are big pimps and are gouging with anti-cancer drug pricing.

Trust me. I know. I am, after all, an insider!
