Back story here.
People who rely on generic drug treatments face "disastrous consequences" if Novartis succeeds in overturning a ban on a patent application in India, international humanitarian organisation Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) warned, urging Novartis to drop its case.
Novartis's application for a patent for its Glivec cancer drug was rejected by the Indian patent office in January 2006, but the company appealed that decision in the High Court.
It is also challenging Article 3D of India's new patent law, which does not grant patents for modifications to existing drugs.
MSF said it had written to Novartis CEO Daniel Vasella to request a meeting, but this had not been granted. MSF said if the ban is overturned, this could have a major impact on India's booming generic drugs industry.

Look for comments re this issue posted earlier. Also all those who want to voice their opinions do it to: daniel.vasella@novartis.com. He is a medical doctor who took the hypocritic oath, "first do no harm". Maybe you can remind him of that. Thee are lot of "doctors" who do lot of harm to others by making decisions like this while "practicing" at big pharma. Dr. Mangele would be proud of them.
oooh they're so evil
How ironic? This same Co. is advertising their new VIOXX-like drug just above this post, earlier and will again.
Anyone who is so desparate to try it, should think twice. Once VIOXX always VIOXX, type of drug that belongs to the same class of drug. Maybe this Co. thinks they can twist the molecule to such extent to drive out the entity that was causing all those heart problems seen with VIOXX. This is questionable. What is not questionable, their determination to promote it as a new miracle VIOXX type drug that has no problems at all. As for us, we are not going to have our parents and grandparents take this new VIOXX. There are too many good alternatives out there to rely on without any risk for VIOXX and VIOXX-like drug complications.
Yes it is true, the new Novartis drug Prexige is in the same class of drugs as Vioxx and possibly will have the same or similar problems once used in large numbers of patients. These things usually show up after certain time of use in large numbers of patiens. It is like new car model. Do not buy it till it proves itself. With drugs, it is even more important. So stick with your old car if it does the job. This new one was modeled on Ford Pinto with some adjustments.
