AstraZeneca - Seroquel: weighty problems continue: now the FT joins in!

Several academic studies pre-dating the advertisement suggested Seroquel did not carry a lower risk of weight gain than other antipsychotics. One, published in 2000 in the journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica, concluded: “All atypical drugs, with the exception of ziprasidone, have been associated with weight increases. Clozapine seems to have the highest risk of weight gain, followed by olanzapine and quetiapine [Seroquel]. There is probably a lower risk with risperidone, sertindole and zotepine and a still lower risk with amisulpride.”

Much more at the FT

I started on Lamictal, which actually made me lose some weight but it also was not enough to control my manic episodes. Thus, I started taking Seroquel in October, and I have gained 10 pounds. Let me add... I am very very weight conscious... I practically weight myself everyday... I workout at least 3 days a week for at least an hour. The first two weeks of taking Seroquel I was extremely lethargic and slept practically all day. At first I attributed my weight gain (probably around 5 lbs then) to the lack of exercise.

Since then, however, I have compulsively exercised and stuck with only healthy food options and have found I have gained another five pounds (140 lbs to almost 149) and I'm 5'7.

I felt I was very patient and realistic with my weight loss goals... I gave myself two months to lose initially five pounds. This weight gain HAS to be attributed to the Seroquel. I told my doctor I couldn't take it anymore. Considering I used to have an eating disorder. Seroquel made me have this ridiculous appetite that seemed to never go away. The doctor is trying to ween me off of the Seroquel and implement the use of Abilify. Hopefully the weight will be easier to lose now since Abilify is supposed to be much more weigh neutral than Seroquel. UGH!
