Merck Brings On The Sandman - Forbes.com

Merck said Wednesday its Phase IIb study of an investigational insomnia drug showed promising results.

The drug, an orexin receptor antagonist dubbed MK-4305, improved overall sleep efficiency in night one of use as well as by the end of week four in patients with primary insomnia. Orexins are chemicals released by neurons in the hypothalamus part of the brain and are an important regulator of the sleep-wake process. This category of drugs is thought to block the stimulation of the brain's waking system.
