Pfizer Inc. and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. halted a trial of their experimental blood thinner after an increase in bleeding outweighed benefits of the drug.
The treatment, called apixaban, was being tested as a way to prevent additional heart complications in patients who had previously been rushed to the hospital with a heart attack or severe chest pain, a condition known as acute coronary syndrome. Enrollment in the study of 10,800 people in 40 countries was halted and patients will be taken off the drug, the companies said today in a statement.
